OK then its time to pull out the big guns.
You need one of those IBM blade servers in your house.
You know those huge ones that network admins use for entire businesses... yeh, one of those _________________ Love kills. Romance is dead.

Soon as I can afford it (not in the near future, thanks to taking on half of the wife's monthly car payments...YAY for equal responsibility partnerships...) I'm going to setup my long coveted and dreamed of archive machine.
Thinking that basically a bare bones with a SATA raid of 4-8 either 720gb or 1TB seagate barracuda's should serve my needs for a while. Hell, in all likelihood I won't have a monitor or keyboard setup for it, just keep it locked to intranet access only and keep terminal services running, then just telnet over when i need to store/retrieve files. Maybe even keep it down in the basement where things are nice and cool, and just drill a hole through my floor to run cat5 down to it. |

Well of course i need a huge place to store all the 30+ workstations I want, and since all those archives are going to be holding raw HDTV feeds and Blu-Ray .imgs, of course im going to need a nice big tv.
Maybe something along the lines of that 120" samsung. Or was it sony? Forgot who makes that. |

My internet has still sucked ass recently, despite anything I did on my end.
So I spoke with a Comcast tech support representative today.
When I began the conversation, my ping was around 800 ms.
By the time we 'resolved' the issue, about 2 hours later, my ping was around 1400 ms.
This is literally the end of the conversation:
Rep - so what is the status of your connection now?
Me - well, it looks like my ping has gone up to about 1400 ms
Rep - Great! It seems to be working well then
Me - .... my ping should be around 30-40, not 1400
Rep - Oh, you are correct.
Me - [disconnect] _________________ Love kills. Romance is dead.

Well, I dont know what the retard did over at Comcast, but he fucked my whole modem up. I just reset the whole damn thing and setup my wireless network from scratch.
Whatever I did worked, cuz now my ping is in the 50's (at least for now).
Who knows, maybe I'll finally be able to play CSS again unless Comcast decides to put the smackdown on my ping again. _________________ Love kills. Romance is dead.

I found out the problem with my network today.
It wasnt Comcast.... it was my computer illiterate older sister.
She has the following programs open simultaneously:
- Skype
- AIM
- BitTorrent
- Limewire
- Several instances of Internet Explorer
Obviously, these programs were using a substantial amount of bandwidth.
I then had to have a 30 minute conversation with her explaining that we dont get 'unlimited internet speed' as she referred to it. Nor does the ISP 'give us speed boosts when we are using a lot of bandwidth'
..... sigh _________________ Love kills. Romance is dead.

Hey consider yourself lucky, we had to run an entire new wire from the pole, drill holes into the walls and run cable through shitty drop tile ceiling to get into the living room to get my problem fixed.
And as far as their fucking "speed boost". Blah, buncha marketing bullshit hype. Yeah, from a standard cable internet account you get the speed boost up to about 1.5MB (not Mbps) for, oh the first 3-10 seconds of a new connection/download.
The manner in which I obtain my various large files is a long, continuous DL from a single source. Granted I have "business class" account speeds thanks to a friendly tech, but even with that, and back when I had the standard cable internet account, the boost only appears for the first 10 seconds or so on a new download, and that's it. It's not periodic, or sustained over any substantial period of time.
Not to say that comcast says otherwise, but it sure as fuck is implied. |
